1. How did you first discover Kingdom of Loathing?
My first encounter with the KoL was in May '04 via a forum I am active in. From that original group, myself and Blythe have been most successful. I didn't understand the game at first and left it for a month and then deleted my first character because I broke my hippy stone (they were unhealable back then). I then created my current character and a multi or two and have never looked back.
It is so strange seeing new characters play and then reminisce in /hardcore or /veteran about the gold ol' days where every second player was a shore bot and there was a channel that did not exist. We also never seemed to know the time of some thing's coming.
2. What is your signature character class?
Accordion Thief all the way. Stealing from mariachis and just playing songs all day. What a life. I originally choose that class on a whim but have come to love it deeply. After the implementation of ascension the fun left being an AT slightly when you couldn't cast 1500 turns of any buffs easily and cheaply.
3. What has been your greatest accomplishment so far?
My greatest accomplishment was ascending with the palindromic stats of 1111/1111/2222. Not gaining stats for a few weeks and then having the pickle factory and the Naughty Sorceress ruin that was fun until I realized the fun of 668 scrolls.
I am an avid collector. For a period of time I was the first collector of Imp Ales but eventually sold it to Ashamalee for a good profit. I then realized my love of Nethack and am aiming for 5000 of every Nethack themed item in the game. Among some other great achievements was getting a hypnodisk while auto-adventuring and getting a Custom Avatar from that Hypnodisk.
4. What, if anything, has blown up in your face?
Finding a hypnodisk back in bugmeat days, selling it for 5 Mr. A's and then not selling those Mr. A's for 100mil meat each. If I had kept that meat for 2 months I could have easily bought 50 Mr. A's.
5. What has been your most ambitious project to date?
My most ambitious project so far has been Testudinata. You may know I am in clan Otori and we are famous for our buffbots. I decided to start a project to ascend a character to get every single buff in the game + a few helpful intrinsic skills and then end on as a Sauceror. With the help of Badmojo who did a lot of the tedious ascending we finally ended up with a uber-buffbot who is already at level 36. The highlight of that was receiving an a letter from NO that they were just attempting one just as we were making ours fully live.
6. What aspect of KoL has persistently thwarted you at every turn?
The markets in some items have definitely annoyed me but my failure to anticipate the massive amount of deflation in the kingdom has really hurt me. Also mall limits are teh evil. I thought price limits would hurt my collecting but they do quite the opposite which was rather surprising.
7. What is the one thing you would change about KoL if you could?
I would completely revamp clans and especially clan warfare. This has been crying for a change since I joined the game well over a year ago.
8. What is your favorite joke or reference in KoL?
The whole of the Dungeon of Dungeons is highly amusing to me but just adventuring in any area and identifying a reference is always a great feeling.
9. What brings you back to KoL night after night?
My clan is what keeps me coming back. Without the awesome guys in Otori I would not nearly be as interested in the game as it is. When I became Membership Minister for Otori way back, I essentially spent at least one hour at KoL every day and generally a lot more.
10. How long do you think you will keep playing?
I don't ever plan to stop playing. The game has affected my studying at university but I think this year will be challenging as I now have a part-time job and quite a few other extra commitments. I think Oxycore will look at lot more attractive.
11. You get to have a Jick-made custom item. What is it?
I would like any item that was Nethack themed. A Blessed Bag of Holding would be pretty cool though. It would be a backpack of course and would be the only rare of a redundant piece of equipment. Of course I have owned every item in the game for 10 minutes so I have essentially owned every Jick-made custom item already. When Jick had just implemented the system to restore items to people from White Wednesday a bug was introduced that gave anyone who didn't need an outfit every item in the game. I could have exploited and sold items but I decided against that. I really wish I had screenshoted myself with all the Custom Rares and got the ID's of some unimplemented items.
