11 Questions with ashamalee (#89522)

1. How did you first discover Kingdom of Loathing ?
KoL was something that just didn't interest me at the beginning. My friends kept mentioning it, and I kept on procrastinating on visiting the site. Maybe six to eight weeks after they first mentioned it, I finally signed up, and as my presence here today suggests, I was instantly hooked. I created a few multis along the way to allow me to experience the other classes, but ended solely with ashamalee (#89522).
2. What is your signature character class?
Wow, I have actually never thought about this question before. However, without a doubt, I would have to say that the Accordion Thief would be my signature class. I think most people consider their first class their signature class, but when I first started, there was something about the Accordion Thief that just stood out above the other classes. I had no knowledge of the game whatsoever at that time.
3. What has been your greatest accomplishment so far?
The establishment of Otori. Items (largest collections in the game), meat (billions), and power (Top 15) have all meant something to me over the time I have been playing. Otori is the reason I still play the game. For nearly sixteen months, I have seen us grow and develop in many ways. All things considered, though, I still love to collect worthless items, and lots of them.
4. What, if anything, has blown up in your face?
Administrative decisions regarding Otori that led to some nasty incidents. I was learning, and I guess I still am.
5. What has been your most ambitious project to date?
I don't know… Once again, I love Otori and my collections. I loved being a power gamer back in my day and a PvP king during the refining of the PvP system. I may as well say something, so that would be to see Otori grow (in many ways) as much as possible.
I’d also like to point out that Otori recently claimed the second position on the clan attacks board. This is a position that we never thought possible after accepting that fourth was our fate with the introduction of the new clan warfare system, which was quite some time ago now. At the rate we are progressing, without the aid of bots (as Head Clan likes to say), we will catch them in about three years. I think it's safe to say that by then, hopefully, Jick would have reset the boards to be fair for everyone. That’s something that we wanted to happen at the original change, long ago.
6. What aspect of KoL has persistently thwarted you at every turn?
I think it's all about wealth for this answer. I have never found a rare or semi-rare (or randomly received in the case of the comfy blanket), and as such, I’ve had to create my own wealth. Consistent manipulation of the mall was my strategy back in 2004, as well as the humble yeti fur trade that happened continuously. However, in terms of creating wealth, I have continuously been thwarted by items coming back, or someone really mucking up the mall prices (what I mean is, someone better at mall manipulation then me). The recent crash and sequential re-introduction of the lost Icy Peak devalued my Mafia arias by a couple hundred million. However, I don't mind losing meat on rafflebot—that's something we have control over.
On a side note from wealth, I didn't like the fact that the records of the eighteen Mafia wines I drank and fifteen Radio Button Candies I ate prior to the time where records were kept are forever lost.
7. What is the one thing you would change about KoL if you could?
Right now, as I don't actually have any influence on changes, I wouldn't change anything. I enjoy sitting back and watching the game develop into something that Jick and Skully can be proud of. Knowing every time something changes there will be people out the ready to whine about it, and others to praise the idea. I'm no saint, of course—I have disliked a few, but amazingly only a few, of the introductions made into the game since my beginning.
8. What is your favorite joke or reference in KoL?
It's a shame that I miss a lot of the pop culture references due to being an Aussie, but even then, the joke references in the game are tremendously bountiful. If the game comes up in a discussion, the ones that I always mention are the Orc Chasm and the asshat. Seriously, putting two bum cheeks together and creating an asshat is sheer genius. ;)
9. What brings you back to KoL night after night?
Otori. Whether it's to lurk in the background and watch the chat roll on by, or to tackle some serious issues out on the forums, Otori is what brings me back each day.
10. How long do you think you will keep playing?
I've drifted out of the limelight quite a bit already. I was once a face that everyone in /trade knew. But that place keeps going downhill and my chat nowadays tends to stay in /clan. Very rarely do I leave the humble realm. Next year, serious university starts and I think that will force me to move back another step. In fact, I hope it does. KoL consumes way too much of my time, and without a strong force pulling me back, I am not about to stop.
11. You get to have a Jick-made custom item. What is it?
E-penis +++, and that's something I have never said before. :D I have no idea, but I instinctively think something relating to Otori and a solitary Phoenix. I’ve never given the idea enough thought to really answer this question.
